He Keeps Hurting You and Apologizing—When Is It No Longer a Mistake?

He hurts you.
You confront him.
He apologizes, promises to change and becomes more attentive for a while.
Just when you begin to believe things are finally different, the same behavior returns.
Now you’re having the same conversation and listening to another apology.
Because you love him, you want to believe him. Because nobody is perfect, you wonder whether you should be more patient. But patience should not require you to ignore a pattern.
A mistake is something a person acknowledges and actively works to correct. A pattern continues despite repeated conversations, apologies and promises.
The real question is not simply, “Did he apologize?”

Ask:
Did he clearly acknowledge what he did without blaming me?
What action followed the apology?
Can I see consistent change over time?
Is the behavior actually stopping?
An emotional apology can sound sincere. It can even produce temporary improvement. But lasting change requires more than words.
You are not expecting perfection. You are looking for responsibility, honesty and observable progress.
Listen to the apology—but also watch what follows it.
An apology may acknowledge the moment, but changed behavior addresses the pattern.
In this week’s Transformation Experience, I share the A.C.T.I.O.N. framework to help you evaluate what happens after someone says, “I’m sorry.”
If you have been explaining away warning signs because you want the relationship to work, my Red Flags eBook can help you identify the patterns you may be overlooking.
